Lawrence Rice, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Chief of the Academic Division of Hematology, and Clinical Service Chief of Hematology/Oncology at The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Dr. Rice graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1974, then completed Internal Medicine residency and Hematology fellowships at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. He remained on the full-time faculty of Baylor through 2006, rising to Professor of Medicine, Professor of Thrombosis Research, Program Director Hematology (1986-2006), Course Director Hematology/Oncology (1981-2007); currently he remains Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Baylor.

Dr. Rice has a large clinical practice with two-thirds of his patients having benign hematologic disorders and one-third hematologic malignancy. He has substantial teaching obligations, and has won numerous outstanding teacher awards (inducted into the Baylor Department of Medicine Outstanding Faculty Educator Hall of Fame inaugural class). He is a frequent lecturer or chairman at national meetings and symposia.

Dr. Rice has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and monographs. Major interests include thrombocytopenias (heparin-induced, ITP, TTP, TPOs), anemias (iron metabolism, hemolysis), erythropoietin actions (neocytolysis), and anticoagulant therapies.
